About me

Hello! My name is Shiori Chen, and I’m a senior at Carlmont High School in Belmont, California. I currently serve as editor-in-chief of Highlander magazine, and I’m also the founder and president of Art Showcase Club, an art magazine at my school.

Background

I’ve been part of the Carlmont High School journalism program for three years. As a sophomore, I served as a staff writer for Scot Scoop, our online news outlet. In my junior year, I continued as a staff writer for Scot Scoop while also serving as an editor of the Highlander, our school’s print magazine. As a senior, I now serve as editor-in-chief of the Highlander. Learn more about my leadership work.

In addition to print reporting and editing, I have worked across multiple mediums to broaden my reporting skillset, such as producing occasional broadcast videos and working as a photojournalist.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing the saxophone and teaching it to elementary school students. I also like cleaning beaches with friends, going mountain biking, and taking photos.

In Fall 2026, I will attend Northwestern University as a member of the class of 2030 and study journalism at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.

Experience

I earned Adobe InDesign certification at the Fall Nashville 2025 NSPA & JEA National Convention in Nashville and previously attended the 2024 NSPA & JEA Convention in Philadelphia.

Additionally, from 2024 to 2025, I worked at My Modern Met — an international art and culture publication — as an editorial intern, where I wrote daily articles over the summer and published more than 50 pieces. I was also assigned to revise older posts for search engine optimization (SEO) and update affiliate content, which gave me a strong understanding of professional digital publishing standards

I have received several national awards for my work. Most meaningfully, I was named first place Multimedia Journalist of the Year by the National Scholastic Press Association at the Fall 2025 Individual Pacemaker Awards. I also earned a National Silver Medal in Journalism from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for my four-part investigative series, “Questioning Progress: Native American Skepticism Surrounding California’s New Educational Mandate.” Learn more about my recognition.
